Procedure

Ingredients:

1. Your Sandyavandana Kit
a. Panchapatra Uddarani
b. Havankund

2. Rice grains, Sandalwood paste, Turmeric (if possible kumkum )

3. For those who will be doing pitrutarpan (oblations to the ancestors should only be done by people whose biological father has passed away), keep some black sesame seeds also.

Preparation:

Wet the Sacred thread (Janeu or Poonal) with a little water and turmeric so that it becomes uniformly yellow in color.

 

Procedure:

0. Guru Puja (if there is no gurupuja pundit, you can chant Guru brahma guru vishnu….)

1. Ganapati prarthana
With folded hands pray that all obstacles be removed and the way forward becomes smooth.

Vakratunda mahaakaaya surya koti samaprabha
nirvighnam kurume deva sarva karyeshu sarvadaa

shuklambaradharam vishnum shashi varnam chaturbhujam
prasanna vadanam dhyaayet sarva vighnopashaantaye

2. Punyaha – purification
Sprinkle water over yourself and the ingredients

OM apavitrah pavitro vaa sarvaavasthaan gato’pi vaa |
yah smarEt puNDareekaakShaM sa baahyaabhyantarah shuchihi ||

3. Achamanam
OM achyutaaya namaHa |
OM anantaaya namaHa |
OM govindaaya namaHa |

4. Pranayama
praNavasya parabrahma RRShihi – touch the head
dEvee gaayatree Chandaha – touch the nose
paramaatma dEvataa – touch the heart
praaNaayaamE viniyogaha

OM bhoohu OM bhuvaHa OM svaHa OM mahaHa OM janaHa – Breathing In
OM tapaHa OM satyaM |
OM tatsaviturvarENyaM bhargo dEvasya dheemahi – Hold the breath

5. Sankalpa
Take some flowers and rice grains in your hand

Pour water on your hands and drop the flowers and rice grains into the plate

6. Prokshana
Sprinkle water on the janeu

7. 9 tantu devata puja
Sprinkle some rice grains on the sacred thread while chanting the following mantras

Om bhuhu omkaaraaya namah, Om bhuvaha omkaaraaya namah, Om svaha omkaaraaya namah, Om bhur bhuvah svaha omkaaraaya namah,

Om bhuhu agnaye namah, Om bhuvaha agnaye namah, Om svaha agnaye namah, Om bhur bhuvah svaha agnaye namah,

Om bhuhu pitrun namah, Om bhuvaha pitrun namah, Om svaha pitrun namah, Om bhur bhuvah svaha pitrun namah,

Om bhuhu prajaapataye namah, Om bhuvaha prajaapataye namah, Om svaha prajaapataye namah, Om bhur bhuvah svaha prajaapataye namah,

Om bhuhu vayave namah, Om bhuvaha vayave namah, Om svaha vayave namah, Om bhur bhuvah svaha vayave namah,

Om bhuhu suryaaya namah, Om bhuvaha suryaaya namah, Om svaha suryaaya namah, Om bhur bhuvah svaha suryaaya namah,

Om bhuhu vishvedevaaya namah, Om bhuvaha vishvedevaaya namah, Om svaha vishvedevaaya namah, Om bhur bhuvah svaha vishvedevaaya namah,

8. Touch the sacred thread to the earth while chanting

syona prithivi bhavan nrikshara niveshani | yaccha nah sharma saprathah |

9. Lift it up from the earth while the chanting

Om dEvasya tvA savituH prasavE.shvinOrbAhubhyAM pUShNO hastAbhyAM Om

10. Hold the sacred thread in your hands and chant the gayatri ten times

11. Show the sacred thread to the Sun (lift it up) as you chant

Om udvayaM tamasaspari jyOtiSh pashyaMta uttaraM
dEvaM dEvatrA sUrya maganma jyOtir uttamaM

12. Chanting the mantra wear the sacred thread – placing it above the left shoulder and below the right armpit
yagnopaviitam paramam pavitram prajaapatehe yat sahajam purasta’at
ayushyam agriyam prati muncha shubhram yagnopavitam balamastu tejaha

13. Remove your sacred thread by bringing down from below your legs chanting

upaveetaM bhinna tantuM jeerNaM kashmala dUShitam
visRujAmi jalE brahma varchO deergh Ayurastu mE

14. Tarpana –
While the tarpayami mantras are chanted, offer a little water into the plate while holding some rice grains in the hand.
For Devata tarpan

Om bhuhu devaans tarpayaami, Om bhuvaha devaans tarpayaami, Om svaha devaans tarpayaami, Om bhurbhuvasvaha devaans tarpayaami

Rishi tarpan

Om bhuhu rishins tarpayaami, Om bhuvaha rishins tarpayaami, Om svaha rishins tarpayaami, Om bhurbhuvasvaha rishins tarpayaami

Pitru tarpan (for those whose father has died). Hold a little sesame seeds (til seeds) and offer a little water letting it flow over the til seeds as shown

15. Samarpana

yad kritantu mayaa dEva paripoorNaM tadastu tE ||

kaayEna vaachaa manasEndriyairvaa budhyaatmanaa vaa prakRRtEssvabhaavaat |
karomi yadyat sakalaM parasmai naaraayaNaayEti samarpayaami ||

OM tat sat brahmaarpaNamastu |

After this perform your sandhyavandana and agnikarya as usual.

You can chant 1008 gayatri or 10 malas on the next day or on the same day that you change your sacred thread.
